Gov. Jon Corzine said he has complied with Tuesday?s deadline to turn over e-mails discussing state business with his former girlfriend, union leader Karla Katz.
Republicans sued to force Corzine to give up the e-mails. State GOP Chairman Tom Wilson accuses Corzine of a cover-up involving Katz, who leads the Communications Workers of American Local 1034.
Corzine has acknowledged giving Katz?s brother-in-law, Rocco Riccio, $15,000 after the governor forced Riccio to quit a state job. Wilson says the money contradicts Corzine?s claims that he had no additional financial connections to Katz, who got large sums of money from Corzine as he started his gubernatorial bid in 2005. However, Corzine says he gave the money to Riccio so he wouldn?t lose his house.
Wilson, however, suggests the money was a payoff because a third of the payments were by money order.
Corzine says there is no financial relationship with anyone else in Katz?s family. However, Republicans are now asking him to release his gift tax returns.
A judge will now review the materials and decide if the information should be made public, as demanded in the GOP lawsuit.
