Gov. Jon Corzine has finalized a deal with the Communication Workers of America to prevent layoffs through 2010.
The deal calls for wage freezes and unpaid furloughs in exchange for job safety. Workers will also regain the day after Thanksgiving as a paid vacation. That paid holiday was lost in 2006.
Republicans are claiming Corzine rushed to make the deal in order to avoid a demonstration outside his re-election campaign kickoff and also secure Vice President Joe Biden as the event's keynote speaker. Corzine refutes those claims, but Republicans have asked the attorney general to investigate.
While the Republicans question the political motivation of the labor deal, Corzine is pushing to expand its breadth. The governor says the agreement could save New Jersey between $300 million and $400 million if it can be extended to unions still at the bargaining table.
