Convicted cop killer Khalil Tutt was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in prison for the death of Newark Police Officer Dwayne Reeves.
Reeves' family and fellow officers say they are very happy with the judge's decision. Family members of the deceased officer pleaded with the judge to throw the book at Tutt, who was acquitted of murder and convicted of reckless manslaughter.
Prosecutors were also pleased with the sentencing.
"Today, I can announce a violent, unrepentant cop killer was removed from the streets of Newark," said Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow.
Reeves was killed in 2005 in a Newark schoolyard while trying to break up a fight. Tutt is a reputed member of the Bloods street gang, although he denies being a gang member.
Tutt will not be eligible for parole for at least 18 and a half years.
