A young boy fighting his last battle with a terminal illness was brought a special gift by some firefighters in Ocean County this week.
Members of the Barnegat Fire Department had recently learned that doctors had exhausted all of Kyle McGetrick's options. He was coming home to spend his last days surrounded by his family.
The 11-year-old has been an honorary member of the department since he was diagnosed nearly seven years ago. Kyle's father, Gene, is a long-time member of the fire company.
The Barnegat Fire Department organized a convoy to deliver a basket from Oceans of Love, an organization dedicated to helping Ocean County children with cancer and their families.
Support for the young boy quickly grew. The convoy to deliver the basket spanned 92 fire trucks from 32 fire companies in Ocean County. Firefighters also gave Kyle patches and t-shirts from the various departments they represented.
"Words cannot express how special everyone made the night for Kyle," Gene McGetrick said. "My family would like to thank all the firefighters from all the fire stations, as well as the Barnegat Police Department who closed streets to allow the procession and the Barnegat First Aid for participating as well. They all made my little boy smile and we miss seeing that."
