One of the biggest construction projects in New Jersey history on Route 18 is not only taking its toll on commuters but is also hurting business.
Paul Bindra, who owns the Route 18 Exxon in New Brunswick, says business is down more than 50 percent since the construction started two years ago. He adds that the Exxon is the only retail business on the road inside the construction zone, and since his customers rely on convenience, they are likely to fill up elsewhere during the project.
The four-year project will add two lanes in each direction and replace bridges. Traffic signals, noise walls and pedestrian walkways will also be put up along Route 18. A Department of Transportation spokesman says the project is going well and should be finished on schedule.
