Friends and family members of a high school hockey star killed in a car accident this week honored his memory Friday.
Classmates and family members of Dan Triano, 17, held a fundraiser Friday at the Kenilworth Recreation Center hoping to create a scholarship for student athletes in his name.
Fellow students and family members sold buttons and T-shirts in his memory. His uncle says the shirts sold out in less than two hours.
People who knew Triano say he was a standout player for the Dayton-Brearly hockey team and the New Jersey Youth Devils. He had recently been named the top player in Union County. He planned to become a pharmacist.
On Wednesday, shortly after he left school, Triano lost control of his car. He hit another vehicle head-on and died hours later.
A memorial for Triano continues to grow at the crash site on Cooper Road in Scotch Plains. His teammates have left several mementos, including a bag filled with hockey pucks.
Triano's family says part of the proceeds from Friday's sale will help establish the scholarship. The rest of the money raised will be donated to epilepsy research, because his cousin Amanda has the disease.
Mourners will have a celebration of life ceremony Monday morning, and there will be a student vigil held at the David Brearly High School football field in Kenilworth Wednesday night from 7 to 11 p.m.
