Lakewood residents are demanding more police presence on the streets after an Orthodox Jewish man was violently attacked Sunday.

Members of the Lakewood Civilian Safety Watch, a volunteer patrol group, say the attack does not appear to be a hate crime. They say the two suspects also robbed the victim, who is said to be an Israeli man in his 40s.

Still, many in Lakewood?s large Orthodox community say the attack brings to mind the recent baseball bat beating of a local rabbi. Patrol member David Braun says that attack prompted him to be more active in protecting the community.

The volunteers say there?s only so much they can do without weapons or the power to arrest. They say more police patrols are needed.

The victim was treated for cuts and bruises to his head and face and has been released from the hospital.
