The first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in New Jersey this year has been confirmed on a commercial bird farm in Burlington County.
State agriculture officials say the farm owner reported increased bird mortality, leading to testing that detected HPAI at the New Jersey Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory. The farm is now quarantined while federal labs conduct confirmatory tests.
“The recent detection in a commercial flock is being addressed swiftly and collaboratively,” Agriculture Secretary Ed Wengryn said, adding that the state remains focused on protecting the poultry industry.
Officials say the virus poses a low risk to the public but urge poultry owners to watch for symptoms such as sudden death, respiratory issues and decreased egg production. Anyone who suspects HPAI is encouraged to contact the New Jersey Department of Agriculture.
