The Ready To Be Free Ministry in Plainfield dedicated today's service to the memory of Ann Jefferson, the grandmother who died along with four of her grandchildren in a fire in South Plainfield on Thursday.
Jefferson, 62, was known to regularly attend the church.
"She loved those grandkids," says Betty Shorter, a friend of Jefferson. "There was nothing she wouldn't do for those grandkids, nothing. And those grandkids loved their grandmother."
"I'm very joyful now because I know she's with God," says Pastor Michael Jones.
Meanwhile, fire investigators say there was only one working smoke alarm in the two apartments in the building and it was located in the basement.
The South Plainfield Senior Center is still collecting food and clothing for the surviving family members.
