Gov. Chris Christie addressed the "millionaire's tax" at Tuesday's town hall meeting in Freehold.
State Democrats have asked the governor to raise the tax rate on earnings over $1 million, in order to fund the public-employee pension system.
However, at the town hall, Gov. Christie explained why New Jersey's wealthiest residents should not have to pay more in taxes.
"The only place to go is to all of you. There are more of you than there are of them," the governor said. "The higher the taxes remain, the more millionaires are going to leave."
He also explained the problem with the pension system is not something the state can tax its way out of.
This was the governor's 131st town hall event.
