Gov. Chris Christie says that Federal Emergency Management Agency workers are on the ground assessing damage caused by a wave of storms that battered the southern part of the state.
Christie said Friday that he will only seek a disaster declaration if it's needed to help the state get more disaster relief.
He says the state emergency management office estimates Tuesday's storms caused $31 million worth of damage.
More than 80,000 homes and businesses still are without electricity on Friday.
Most are Atlantic City Electric customers, who may have to wait until Sunday before the power is back on. Most are in Gloucester and Camden counties. The utility lost service to more than 280,000.
PSE&G expects to restore service to more than 2,500 customers who remain without electricity on Friday.
