Parents who though their children were safe at a Franklinville day care are outraged to learn the kids may have been exposed to mercury at the site.
Craig Stapleton says the skin on his 2-year-old daughter's feet and hands peel off, which is a sign of mercury poisoning. Kaitlyn Stapleton is one of about 20 children whose urine tests showed elevated levels of the toxin. Attorney Chris Mangenello says children in two families he's representing tested twice over the limit the state considers safe.
The state closed the day care center, which used to be the site of a thermometer factory, in late July. It's one of about 1,800 areas that officials removed off a contaminated list last year. Parents worry that means more children and adults are at risk. State officials now promise to inspect those sites.
