A chain-reaction crash in Marlboro took down a utility pole and set a tanker truck full of gasoline on fire.
The crash happened Tuesday afternoon. Police say that it all started when the unsuspecting tanker driver parked on the side of Route 79 to grab lunch.
“We had a chain-reaction accident where a wrecker ended up impacting the rear of what looks like a blue Hyundai,” said Marlboro Police Capt. Fred Reck. “The wrecker was forced into a telephone pole where a high tension power line was snapped.”
Reck says that the power line set the tanker truck on fire, leading people to fear that it may explode. But firefighters were able to put out the fire with foam before that could happen.
One of the vehicles also crashed into a day care center, which was closed at the time.
A strip mall and several nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution and so the fuel in the truck could be drained. Police said the tanker driver was following the law when he parked on the side of the road.
Route 79 was closed for a time while the crash was cleaned up.
No injuries were reported.
