A Catholic priest's troubled history has caught up to him in Wayne.

In the 1990s, Father James Tully was put on probation for improper contact with teenage boys in Wisconsin. Tully relocated to Wayne this summer.

Bill Nash won $75,000 in damages after Tully made an indecent proposal to him in seminary school. Nash came to town Wednesday to warn residents of Tully's presence.

Tully has been staying on and off at a home run by the Xaverian Missionary Fathers, a Catholic order. Tully moved in under strict supervision in August. There have been no incidents since his arrival, but Tully has been in Wayne three months after being granted permission to stay for two weeks.

Tully's charges were misdemeanors, so he does not have to register as a sex offender in New Jersey. According to the Paterson Diocese, Tully has requested to be voluntarily defrocked by the Vatican.
