Case of viral meningitis reported at Mount Olive High School
School officials announced that a student at Mount Olive High School has tested positive for viral meningitis.
Principal Kevin Stansberry sent out a message via the school's website saying, "While this can be upsetting, the chance of your child or you also becoming ill with the disease is very small. Viral meningitis is not the same as bacterial meningitis."
Stansberry said about 90 percent of viral meningitis cases are caused by a stomach virus and will generally go away with rest.
Students at the school tell News 12 New Jersey that a football player got sick and may have spread the virus to another person. A student on the team said the locker room was cleaned and that all players are taking precautions.
Department of Health officials say the disease can spread through direct contact.
