A 26-year-old Carteret man accused of beating his grandmother to death was expected in court Friday morning but did not appear.
Cyril Lloyd did not show up for court because he refused to leave his jail cell, according to his lawyer. His attorney was present at the courtroom and told the judge that based on a conversation with Lloyd, it’s clear “he suffers from significant health issues that will require a risk assessment.” The judge announced that she'd order a risk assessment.
Earlier this week, police responded to Taylor Avenue after receiving a 911 call that there was a man walking around covered in blood. Police located Lloyd and transported him home, where they found his 77-year-old grandmother Juanita Quinones dead inside the home. She appeared to have multiple head wounds.
Lloyd was arrested and is being held at Middlesex County Jail. He was charged with first-degree murder and weapons offenses.
He's expected back in court on June 2.
