Heavy rain triggered flash flooding across Newark on Thursday, leaving vehicles stranded and prompting multiple water rescues.

Flooding was reported in several parts of the city as storms dumped enough rain to overwhelm roadways and drainage systems.

Under the I-78 overpass at Frelinghuysen Avenue and Empire Street, several vehicles became trapped in deep floodwater. Rescue crews helped people from the stranded vehicles as others were seen walking through thigh-high water.

Several more vehicles were trapped by floodwaters near Frelinghuysen Avenue and Noble Street.

At Meeker Avenue and Empire Street, a vehicle stalled in floodwater.

Two people were rescued from vehicles caught in flooding near Foundry and Ferry streets.

Near Avenue L and Wilson Avenue, city workers stood in near thigh-high water while trying to clear drains as traffic moved through the flooded roadway.

Flooding was also reported on South Street near Van Buren Street, where tractor-trailers could be seen driving through standing water.

The flooding followed a round of heavy rain that moved through New Jersey on Thursday.

By Friday morning, conditions had improved as the area began drying out.
