Authorities in Essex County are investigating an accident in which a vehicle struck and killed a New Jersey Institute of Technology employee as he walked to work.
Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray says the accident occurred near campus around 7:45 a.m. Thursday.
Seventy-year-old Richard Sweeney of Metuchen was struck while he was crossing the street by a woman driving a Nissan Altima. Sweeney was the head librarian at the school.
The driver remained at the scene. Sweeney was pronounced dead at University Hospital at 10:45 a.m.
No charges had been filed as of Thursday evening, and an investigation was continuing.
