A brook in North Haledon now has a new name because the original name was deemed offensive.
Squaw Brook is now named First Brook. The federal government has deemed the word “squaw” offensive to Native Americans.
But many people in the borough – including the mayor – disagree with the change.
“It’s a stupid name. If this is so offensive, why don’t they come up with an intelligent name?” asks Mayor Randy George. “To me, it just proves that they’re in such a hurry to change the name that they didn’t give it any thought of what would be a good replacement name.”
Although the brook has a new name, there is still a Squaw Brook Road in town that hasn’t had its name changed.
