Some of Broadway’s best performers are teaming up with promising young singers from New Jersey for a good cause.
It is called “Broadway Buddies.” The program pairs Broadway performers with gifted young singers who have dreams of being on stage professionally one day.
“It creates a much more tactile, real way to, not just dream about it, but maybe actually be a part of it,” says actor Joshua Morgan.
Morgan is a mentor in the Montclair-based Vanguard Theater Company program.
Samy Cordero is now majoring in acting after Morgan coached her for several years.
“He wrote my recommendation letter. I called him before every audition to prep. He helped me pick my material,” she says.
The students and mentors perform duets every year, in a concert culminating their time together.

This year’s concert will be held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic. The concert will be streamed and money raised will go toward the Actor’s Fund, which provides assistance to those who work in entertainment who are now out of work because of COVID-19.
A date for the virtual concert has not yet been set.
Vanguard Theater Company is a nonprofit that produces diverse works on stage and educational programming.
More information about the Broadway Buddy program and the end-of-the-year concert can be found on the organization’s website.
