New Jersey wildlife officials say a trap has been set for a bear that reportedly came into contact with a 7-year-old Bergen County boy over the weekend.
State Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Caryn Shinske says the boy encountered the bear off Skyline Drive in Oakland while hiking through Ramapo Mountain State Forest on Saturday.
Shinske says the boy had marks on his body resembling scratches or cuts. He was evaluated at Hackensack University Medical Center. Officials have not confirmed whether the marks were left by the bear or thorns from the woods.
Conservation officials say the boy described seeing a bear weighing an estimated 200 pounds.
Officials say a barrel-shaped trap containing a bait bag was set in the forest Sunday.
Borough officials say there's no cause for alarm.
