A controversial plan asking Bound Brook landlords to investigate tenants' immigration status was brought before the borough council Tuesday night.
The resolution urges landlords to verify that renters are legal citizens. Supporters say it will put an end to overcrowded apartments as well as stop the influx of illegal immigrants.
Mayor Carey Pilato is against the plan.
"It's like asking us to disband the IRS and have the borough of Bound Brook start collecting taxes on behalf of the federal government ? we don't have the wherewithal," says Pilato.
Pilato says the resolution would bring civil rights lawsuits even though it is not an ordinance that can be enforced.
