The Bronx has unveiled a budget focusing on housing, health, education and the economy for the 2007 fiscal year.
New York City allocated $31.7 million to the Bronx for the fiscal year, which began July 1. Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion Jr. has earmarked $11,564,000, or 40 percent of the budget, for housing initiatives. Those initiatives include 13 new housing projects for low- and moderate-income families, new co-ops and condos, and rehabilitating existing housing. Bronx hospitals will receive $2,929,850 for equipment. Carrion allocated almost $3.9 million to 21 initiatives at Bronx public schools and colleges for new computers, supplies and construction. Cultural institutions will receive $3 million. Libraries, community centers, parks and roadways also got a piece of the pie.
The Bronx, which makes up 16.6 percent of the city?s population, received 15.2 percent of the mayor?s budget. Carrion says the money will help improve the quality of life in the Bronx, the economy and make the Bronx a tourist destination.
