The mayor of Newark is encouraging other mayors across the Garden State to join him in his fight to curb gun violence.
Mayor Cory Booker, along with Newark Police Director Gary McCarthy and Governor Jon Corzine, announced two planned ordinances at a news conference Thursday. The Newark Gun Ownership Ordinance would require gun owners to report lost or stolen firearms. The Newark Gun Retailer Ordinance would restrict a gun shop from opening up near a residential area or school zone.
Since the execution-style killings of three college students, Booker has taken additional steps to cut down on violence. Booker is asking mayors from around the state to jump on board and pass similar legislation. Booker feels gun violence is not strictly a Newark problem, it?s a problem in the entire state of New Jersey.
Corzine also announced the forming of a special court in Essex County to deal specifically with gun crimes.
