Sen. Cory Booker officially announced his candidacy for president of the United States on Friday, and several Jersey politicians have announced their support.
The former mayor of Newark put up a YouTube video Friday and signed the paperwork that officially made him a 2020 candidate. Booker joins a growing Democratic field of presidential contenders including fellow senators Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand.
The New Jersey senator already has picked up two endorsements from home state Democratic heavyweights.
Gov. Phil Murphy and Sen. Bob Menendez both praised Booker for his willingness to unify people.
"He is someone who is willing to reach out to the other side but will fiercely on principle," Menendez says. "But someone who seeks to bring people, whether in Newark, or on the floor of the Senate in common cause."
If Booker wins the Democratic nomination, his likely opponent would be incumbent President Donald Trump.
In an interview with CBS News on Friday, Trump said that Booker has "no chance" of beating him.
The first contest of the 2020 nomination cycle, the Iowa caucuses, are set for one year from Sunday.
