Two bonded poodles abandoned at a Moorestown dog park have found a new home together, according to the Burlington County Animal Shelter.
The dogs, named Dale and Dana, were brought to the shelter on June 1 after they were found alone at Swede Run Fields dog park in Moorestown. Shelter officials said the pair was severely underweight, had matted coats and wore no collars or identification.
After receiving care from shelter staff and volunteers, the dogs recovered and were made available for adoption.
On Thursday, the Acosta family traveled from Somerset County to adopt both dogs.
"Like a lot of the pets here, Dale and Dana came to the shelter under unfortunate circumstances, but thanks to the love and attention of shelter staff and volunteers they found the forever home they deserve," said Burlington County Commissioner Randy Brolo, the liaison to the animal shelter and the Burlington County Health Department.
Maritza Acosta said the family decided to adopt both dogs after seeing their story on social media.
"One of our previous dogs was a toy poodle, so we were looking to adopt another one," Acosta said. "It's so terrible. I have no words for whoever could do such a thing."
The Burlington County Animal Shelter said it has other pets available for adoption, including Wilma, a pit bull terrier found alone in a vacant church in Mount Holly earlier this month. Adoption fees for animals 1 year and older are currently being waived through July 19 as part of a FIFA World Cup promotion.
