Residents in parts of Jersey City and Hoboken are being urged to boil their water following a major water main break that feeds water to both cities.
Officials say that a construction crew in Kearny was conducting non-utility work on Route 7 and struck a 36-inch water main. The area quickly flooded, causing traffic issues and knocking out water service to residents in both cities.
Crews worked to make repairs, but found the situation to be difficult because the shutoff was under 4 feet of water. The break was able to be isolated and water service started to return by Tuesday evening.
SUEZ Water brought some potable water tanks to several hospitals in the area that are treating COVID-19 patients.
Water service was expected to be fully restored by Wednesday, but the boil water advisory would remain in effect until further notice.
