A Newark police officer has been suspended after body and car camera footage showed him failing to follow protocol, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose announced Wednesday in a press release.
Ambrose said a routine audit showed that the 27-year-old officer stopped a motorist to issue a traffic ticket, but failed to arrest the driver after learning a warrant was out for the driver's arrest.
The Integrity Control Officer immediately initiated an investigation. The investigation revealed that the two-year veteran officer had stopped several other motorists who had arrest warrants, but the drivers were only issued traffic tickets, Ambrose said.
The officer was placed on a six-month suspension Wednesday. Ambrose said that when the officer returns from his suspension in January, he will be sent for additional training.
“I will not tolerate officers taking shortcuts or failing to do their job. The majority of our officers work extremely hard and risk their lives daily doing so. This young officer needs to accept his discipline and to return to work with a compliant and positive work ethic.  If he doesn’t, there is no room for him in the Newark Police Division,” the public safety director said.
Because of administrative reasons, the officer’s name will not be released, Ambrose said.
