Boat operator charged in Barnegat Bay crash that killed passenger, injured 3 others

The operator of a boat who crashed into a channel marker in Barnegat Bay last month, killing one passenger and injuring three others, has been charged.
Kevin Martin Wells, of Warren, is charged with vehicular homicide and two counts of assault by auto or vessel in violation of the state's DWI law, according to Ocean County jail records.
The 40-year-old was booked into the Ocean County Jail on Friday, Aug. 28, records show. He was being held without bail.
Wells was identified by New Jersey State Police as the operator in a July 25 fatal boating crash in the Intracoastal Waterway in Toms River Township.

State police previously said Wells was operating a 32-foot Boston Whaler when it struck a channel marker shortly before 11 p.m. After the crash, Wells piloted the boat to a residence on Silver Lagoon Drive, where emergency personnel provided medical assistance.
Michael T. Bereheiko, 26, of Green Brook, a passenger on the boat, was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Two other passengers suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital. A fourth passenger suffered minor injuries.
