? A black bear was the third to be killed in New Jersey in less than two weeks Wednesday, causing some Millburn residents to question the outcome.
One homeowner in the Short Hills section spotted the 150-pound bear in her backyard. Residents say the animal was asleep at first, shuffled around and later climbed a tree, but was not aggressive. Officials captured and euthanized the animal shortly after they were notified in the morning.
Some residents hoped the animal would be released into the wild, but the state?s new zero tolerance policy calls for killing bears in densely populated areas. While News 12 New Jersey could not get officials from the state Department of Environmental Protection or the Fish and Game Council to comment on the policy, some residents say they are in favor of it.
