A proposed bill aims to help New Jersey school nurses get a handle on the growing number of students with diabetes, which is sometimes caused by obesity.

Ewing High School junior Patrick Walford checks his blood sugar daily in the nurse's office. He suffers from type 1 diabetes. "I really like to be active in gym, so maybe I get hyperactive and my blood sugar gets low and something happens," Walford says.

Walford supports the bill, saying he likes the idea of having more than one person looking out for his best interest. The measure would require two school staff members other than the nurse to be trained in responding to diabetic needs, which can include giving insulin injections.

An Assembly committee will discuss the bill Thursday.
