(10/06/06) BERKELEY ? A Berkeley Township councilman hopes to effectively force sex offenders out of his town through new school bus stop legislation.
Councilman Carmen Amato Jr. is sponsoring a measure that would ban convicted sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a school bus stop. With 750 bus stops in the township, the move would make it virtually impossible for pedophiles to live in Berkeley. Amato isn?t exactly hiding the fact that the measure is designed not only to keep kids at bus stops safe, but it is also meant to get sex offenders out of Berkeley.
Berkeley Township School Superintendent Joe Vicari says he fully supports the measure. In addition, he predicts state lawmakers will eventually take up the cause and impose similar restrictions throughout New Jersey.
