Bergenfield mother killed in Colombia trying to save daughter during earthquake
The woman’s daughter is a Bergenfield High School graduate.

A Bergenfield woman was killed when she tried to save her daughter from a home that collapsed during the magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Colombia on Monday.
In a statement, Bergenfield Mayor Arvin Amatorio said the woman and her family were visiting Colombia when the house where they were staying collapsed during the earthquake.
“The mother, Magnolia, tragically lost her life after reportedly re-entering the home in an effort to save her daughter,” Amatorio said.
The woman’s daughter survived the collapse and is in the hospital recovering from an arm injury she suffered during the disaster. The mayor said she recently graduated from Bergenfield High School.
“The father, who did not travel with them, is en route to Colombia, and the borough is working to reach him and provide support,” the mayor added.
There is no word yet on what the borough plans to do to assist the family or other earthquake victims.
“Our hearts are with Magnolia’s family and loved ones,” Amatorio said. “The entire Bergenfield community mourns with them and is praying for the recovery of her daughter and strength for the family during this unimaginable tragedy. We also keep all families affected by this tragedy in our thoughts.”
Monday’s earthquake killed more than 250 people. Hundreds remain missing as rescue workers continue to sift through the rubble from the powerful quake, which devastated communities throughout Colombia.
