Bergen authorities step up patrols in wake of attacks
Police will beef up patrols of synagogues in Bergen County following a recent rash of fires and vandalism at several temples.
A meeting was held last night between the leaders of 80 Jewish organizations and law enforcement officials in light of the recent attacks.
The meeting took place a day after the residence of a synagogue in Rutherford was firebombed. The rabbi and his family escaped without injury.
It was the fourth incident involving a synagogue in Bergen County since Dec. 10. Officials say they are working with residents and religious institutions to increase security following the attack on Congregation Beth El.
Gov. Chris Christie, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) have condemned the attacks. Community leaders say an interfaith service will be held to show solidarity.
The Anti-Defamation league has announced that it's increasing its reward to $7,500 for any information leading to an arrest in the string of hate crimes in Bergen County. The reward was increased following private donations from across the country.
