The Woodfern Road Bridge, which connects Hillsborough and Branchburg, has been closed as a safety precaution.
Somerset County Bridge Engineer John Kendzulak says during a routine inspection, workers found a bent pin holding up part of the more than 100-year-old bridge.
Kendzulak says the bridge is actually three bridges attached to each other, which all run over the south branch of the Raritan River and its banks. According to inspectors, it is possible an overweight truck caused the damage.
The bridge was partially rebuilt about a year and a half ago, including the section in which the bent pin was found. Officials expect the bridge to be closed about a month while the replacement part is specially made.
Before the bridge reopens, state Department of Transportation inspectors will perform a safety check to see if any other pins are bent.
