More than 1,400 people gathered Saturday to bury a beloved priest who was stabbed to death in the rectory of his New Jersey church last week.
Mourners filled St. Patrick Church in Chatham to honor Rev. Edward Hinds, who was discovered dead after failing to appear for morning Mass Oct. 23. Among those in attendance were about 200 area priests and nuns.
Hinds, who was known to parishioners as "Father Ed," was remembered as a model priest who was kind, gentle and knowledgeable.
After a memorial Mass, Hinds was buried in a Basking Ridge cemetery.
Church custodian Jose Feliciano, 64, is charged with Hinds' murder. He is being held on $1 million bail.
