The 38th annual Belmar D’Jais Sandcastle Contest returned to the 18th Avenue Beach on Wednesday.
Kids and adults of all ages put their imaginations to the test to build sand sculptures. Competitors had just four hours to make their best creations.
Gianni Barisciano won the 8-to-11-year-old category once again this year. He took the top honors with a car sandcastle.
"It feels good to win. I like doing this. It's active and it keeps me productive. I like doing it with my family,” he says. “Best on the Beach” top honors went to a group of several families from across the state with a Superman-themed sculpture called “Fortress of Sanditude” – named after Superman’s famous fortress in Antarctica.
Plans are also underway for the 39th annual contest next year.
