New Jerseyans headed to the Jersey Shore this weekend are wondering how the Garden State's beaches are looking ahead of the summer season.
In Belmar, the Memorial Day weekend is up and running as many visitors hit the boardwalk or took a stroll on the beach.
The city was hit hard by Superstorm Sandy and much of the boardwalk has been rebuilt. Mayor Matt Doherty says he thought they'd be further along by now, but is still pleased with the progress. "Having 1.3 miles of boardwalk rebuilt in time for last Memorial Day weekend helps us build for this Memorial Day weekend and this whole summer season as well," he says.
Belmar has banned smoking on both the beach and boardwalk. Violators are subject to a $25 fine.
