Jersey Shore beachgoers are being told to use caution Wednesday because of potentially dangerous rip currents.
The National Weather Service issued a high rip current risk, which is effective through Wednesday evening for New Jersey.
New Jersey’s beaches are expected to see dangerous swells as Hurricane Gert makes its way along the northeast coast.
Lifeguards say that even seasoned swimmers can get quickly pulled out away from the shore if they get caught in the rip currents. At least six people have died at the Jersey Shore this summer after they became stuck in the rip currents.
People in small boats are also advised to use caution if they are out on the water.
