With high school spring sports officially canceled and the future of Little League up in the air, coaches across New Jersey are trying to figure out ways to keep the young athletes engaged.
The interruption in youth sports has led the owner of a baseball training facility to create virtual workouts for the kids.
Zoned Sports Academy in Bridgewater is a 28,000-square-foot baseball training facility. It now sits empty due to the pandemic.
“So, a typical day would be kids coming in from 2:40 p.m. as soon as high school is over…so we have 300-400 kids a day coming through here,” says CEO Duke Baxter.
Baxter says that the facility has been shut down since March. He says that despite dealing with financial hardships he and his staff decided to put together the online program. He says that some of the young players were starting to feel left behind, so he put together a checklist for them to follow.
“The P is the physical side. You have to do something physical every day, whether it’s walk or do some sprints. The M is mental. What did I learn today? Did I read a book? Did I watch a YouTube video? The S is skill. Did I field balls or did I throw? Did I hit? Then you write them down,” says Baxter.
Baxter says that the workouts are free and available to anyone on the “Dominate the Diamond” Facebook Page. He says that it is important to use the pandemic as a learning opportunity.
“How can we get better at the virtual stuff? How can we get better at fixing certain things maybe at the facility that we didn’t even know were broken or gives you time to say, ‘Hey, we’ve got to regroup,’” he says.
