A Barnegat man was sentenced on Friday for fatally abusing his 6-year-old son in 2021.
Christopher Gregor, 32, was sentenced to 25 years in state prison after being found guilty of aggravated manslaughter and child endangerment in the death of Corey Micciolo. He was sentenced to 20 years for the aggravated manslaughter charge and five years for the child endangerment charge.
Judge Guy Ryan handed down his sentence following an emotional final day in court where both the Micciolo family and Gregor addressed each other directly for the first time since the little boy died in April of 2021.
"Instead of being a good role model for Corey, you decided to beat him to death. Why? Were you jealous of him?” asked Breanna Micciolo, the boy’s mother, as she sat on the witness stand inside Judge Guy Ryan’s courtroom.
"My granddaughter visits her brother's grave and sits on the ground and plays with toys left there for Corey by strangers,” added grandmother Rebecca Micciolo, during the reading of victim impact statements.
For the first time since Corey's death, Gregor spoke to the family and offered this apology.
"What happened on March 20 was inexcusable. To you, Breanna, your family and mine - I want to apologize that you had to see Corey treated that way,” said Gregor.
The date of March 20, 2021, referred to the horrific video showing Gregor trying to get his son to run at speed on a treadmill at his apartment complex over and over again. It was the key piece of evidence in this trial. Corey died less than two weeks later.
“I direct that the no early release sentence on aggravated manslaughter count run first followed by the flat sentence on endangerment, so the aggregate sentence is 25 years, and the jail credit of 885 days comes off the aggregate sentence,” said Judge Ran as he read aloud his sentence.
“To know that the person who mistreated him and ultimately killed him is behind bars. It's good for me,” said Breanna Micciolo as she left the courtroom following sentencing.
Gregor was sentenced to 20 years for the aggravated manslaughter charge and five years for the endangering charge - which will run consecutively. He must serve at least 85% of the 20-year sentence before he's considered for parole.
