Local restaurants are feeling the impact of inflation ahead of the Super Bowl this weekend. According to the USDA, the price of eggs has increased 37.9% since last month. The USDA attributes this to the outbreak of avian flu.
This increase is causing some local restaurants to raise the price of popular menu items, such as chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, and desserts.
"We use eggs for pretty much everything. The eggplant, the crispy chicken, a lot of our dishes," Betsy Pietrangli, manager of Attilio's Pizza & Restaurant.
Pietrangli said the Wall Township family business paid more than $100 for a case of eggs out of necessity. They've been trying very hard not to pass the cost on to customers, but have increased prices slightly. So has Vinnie's Pizza and Sub's in Wall.
"Last year was a little bit busier," said Nick Parascandolo, manager of Vinnie's Pizza. "We had a couple more orders and people calling in advance."
Nick can't say for sure if inflation is causing people to wait before placing their orders, but he knows the family business is feeling the pinch.
Despite not doing a Super Bowl Deal on chicken wings this year, Atillio's has still gotten several orders for sandwich and wrap platters, pizzas and appetizers.
"It's been a little crazy. We're trying to keep our prices as low as we can for customers because we know things are very hard," said Pietrangli. "But the price of eggs is going up and the price of chicken is going up, so it's hard to give deals on the wings because we're getting charged a lot."
Simona's Bakery, in Sea Girt, has also felt the pinch from the rising cost of eggs. They're doing their best to maintain prices despite inflation.
"When we first opened, the price of eggs was about 10 cents an egg and now they're about 57 cents an egg," said Karly Morgan, manager of Simona's Bakery. "The impact is really detrimental on the business and ingredients especially."
Morgan said they're going to do their best to keep prices consistent, but they are closely monitoring the situation.
Regardless of who comes home with a win a Sunday, Simona's has plenty of ways to celebrate.
"We do a lot of fun stuff for the Super Bowl, including cookies, cake pops, mini little cakes with footballs and pull-apart cupcake cakes," said Morgan.
The bakery is also selling Eagles, Chiefs and Taylor Swift-themed cookies from Crystal's Bakery in Sayreville.
