A construction worker was seriously injured when he was pinned by a crane against a wall.
The incident happened near Journal Square on Summit Avenue in Jersey City on Thursday.
Emergency crews tell News 12 New Jersey that the worker was standing near a portable crane that he was operating on the second floor of a building under construction. That machinery somehow moved quickly toward him, pinning the worker to a wall, according to Jersey City Office of Emergency Management director Greg Kierce.
Kierce says that the 43-year-old worker was taken to Jersey City Medical Center for broken rips in the upper-chest area. It all happened around 9:30 a.m.
“What we're told is that he was moving some type of building material in place with another individual,” Kierce says.
The crew is working on a residential high-rise apartment building. Kierce says that there were some reports of workers trying to help when the incident happened.
“Some construction people did attempt to render first aid, but obviously it was our fire department and rescue and police emergency services that were able to get him away from the machine,” he says.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is handling the investigation. The construction site will be shut down for a time.
