Gov. Phil Murphy says a New Jersey state worker was shot and killed Friday on the steps of her Trenton home in a “random act” of gun violence.
Murphy said Monday Vernetta McCray worked for the Department of Children and Families for a decade.
“We are devastated by the loss of Vernetta McCray,” Murphy wrote on Twitter. “She dedicated her career to helping our most-vulnerable children. Prayers to her family and friends. May she rest in peace.”
The governor called the shooting a random act over the weekend in a statement, though it’s not clear what led to the shooting.
