Authorities say a man killed his ex-wife and was later found dead during a murder-suicide after an hours-long standoff with authorities at his home in Carlstadt.
According to Bergen County prosecutors, a relative of Massiel Deoleo, 34, called police Saturday shortly before noon to report the Mahwah resident missing and express concerns about her well-being.
The relative said she had last been with her ex-husband, James Cox, 43, of Carlstadt. Prosecutors say Cox was a known criminal.
A standoff ensured at Cox's home on 6th Street, after which he was found dead of a gunshot wound believed to have been self-inflicted.
The woman's body was found, and authorities said they believe she was killed sometime the previous night.
Neighbors were told to shelter in place for hours during the incident.
