The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has released the name of the man shot and killed by a Newark police officer Tuesday afternoon.
A spokesperson for the office says that the preliminary investigation shows that Talif Scudder, 23, of Irvington, was shot and killed by an officer who was responding to a scene at which a 16-year-old male was allegedly shot by Scudder.
The shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. between Spencer Street and Lindsley Avenue. Scudder was pronounced dead at the scene around 5 p.m.
Authorities say that the teen allegedly shot by Scudder was taken to University Hospital and is in critical but stable condition.
The prosecutor's office says that Newark police officers were able to get to the shooting scene quickly because they were already in the area of an unrelated shooting involving a woman on 18th Avenue between West End Avenue and Alexander Street.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Professional Standards Bureau is investigating the shooting.
The identities of the police officers involved were not immediately made available. The officers were no injured.
