The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office has identified the man killed in a fast-moving house fire in Long Branch.
The victim was identified as 67-year-old Thomas Booth III.
Authorities say that the fire began shortly after 2 a.m. Friday morning at 135 Charles St.
Booth was found in an apartment in the rear of the home and was brought into the front yard, where emergency responders tried to revive him. But he was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
Long Branch Fire Chief Kevin Stout says that the home is made up of two apartments and that it is believed that the fire started in Booth’s unit in the back of the house.
Stout says that he does not believe that the smoke detectors were working.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
