Authorities say a 12-year-old boy drowned at a private Morris County lake club Wednesday afternoon
Police say the boy was pulled from Lake Valhalla in Montville at the Lake Valhalla Club. News 12 New Jersey is told the boy was underwater for about 20 minutes before he was found. CPR was attempted on the boy, but he could not be revived.
“This is a tragic event here today,” says Montville Police Chief Andrew Caggiano. “We do have quite a few people to speak with and so this is going to take a little bit of time to get through.”
Police say that the boy, who was not identified, was swimming by a dock when he went under and did not return to the surface. The exact circumstances are still under investigation.
Club members say there are generally two lifeguards on duty and that there are docks used for boats and to swim around.
"It just breaks my heart honestly. I can't imagine being that parent. Devastating just imagining my own son,” says Montville resident Kim Urba.
The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and Montville Police Department are investigating.
Club management has not commented publicly about the incident.
