Friday classes were canceled for an Asbury Park elementary school after asbestos was found in a third-grade classroom.
The Bangs Avenue School in Asbury Park sent a letter home with its 450 students notifying parents that classes might be canceled for the rest of the school year.
Frances Irvin's child attends the Monmouth County school and is nervous about her child's health. "That worries me," Irvin said. "Now I have to find out what class it is."
A ceiling tile tested positive for high levels of asbestos in test results released Wednesday. The school says the possibly contaminated room is on the third floor.
School board attorney Alan Schnirman said the school would do everything in its power to protect the students and staff.
The school board said they have no evidence that children were directly exposed to the cancer-causing substance. More testing is necessary before the school can be reopened, they said.
