Police are investigating a fatal shooting on West Market Street in Newark.
Officials tell News 12 New Jersey that Nestor De La Rosa, of Paterson, was an armed security officer for a check cashing place. The officer was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:02 a.m.
Officials say 47-year-old De La Rosa was making a delivery at the check cashing place at University Plaza when he was approached by two men. Authorities say the officer reached for his gun, but the suspects shot him in the head.
Police say they are checking to see if the incident was captured on tape by a security camera. The bag De La Rosa was carrying was recovered at the scene with $11,000. It is not known yet if the suspects took any of the money that De La Rosa was carrying.
Authorities believe the attempted robbery was planned.
Police said they have not made any arrests yet in the shooting and would not say if there are any persons of interest in the incident.
Authorities did swarm and investigate the New Hope Village Apartments after witnesses said they saw the suspects run in that direction.
